Slanting Buttress

The initial slabs were covered in consolidated snow. The only evidence of our passing were tiny marks made by our crampon points. The snowy slabs gave way to steeper rock through which we found an icy groove.

There had been a heavy snowfall followed by a thaw and then a re-freeze. As Iain and I picked our way up the scree slopes beneath Lliwedd, icy blocks of snow provided evidence of old avalanches. The remaining snow appeared to have been consolidated nicely by the recent freeze thaw cycle.

We hadn't brought a guide book but I had read the summer description of Slanting Buttress so we headed for this.
